Tyler, Heyward Bey certainly has a chance to ultimately end up as a top 10 bust here. It's hard to require a huge impact in year one. And it's a little hard to figure out if it's all him or if the inept QB play he put up with the first half to two-thirds of the season played a role. Plus, WRs sometimes take a couple years to figure it out. But Heyward Bey was taken too early and he hasn't shown much. I agree.

Brad, Gholston belongs on this list not just because he hasn't done anything but because stories I've read indicate that he's pretty much not fighting to get better but instead just accepting of his fate. Even on special teams he's barely making an impact. So while placement is arguable he definitely looks to me like someone who belongs here.

Tony P. - Lawrence Phillips would qualify right up there with Tony Mandarich and Ryan Leaf among the top draft busts of all time. No question about that.

I'd start QB Alex Smith over Heisman winner Matt Lienhard who's shown nothing when given the chance. Expect his way around a beer bong.

It hasn't even been a year since he was drafted, but there haven't been very many first round picks who have been as invisible as Darrius Heyward-Bey was for the Raiders this season. In the 11 games he played this season, he had less than ten catches, scored only one touchdown and barely topped the 100-yard mark for the entire season. Sure, many people said he was picked way too early, but for a guy who was a pretty good college receiver, it's strange that he's had such a poor transition to the NFL. Maybe his luck will change with a different quarterback or even a different team, but if it doesn't, he's gonna be a whole lot less productive than David Terrell, and that's saying something.

Brad - I think the reason I keep Gholston that high is that he never should have been picked #6 overall anyway. Maybe that's not a great reason, but I literally do not remember reading anything about him pre-draft that said anything other than "workout warrior at combine who disappeared for stretches at Ohio State."

Alex Smith could be on the list, but he had a decent second season, and has looked pretty good this year, I think (60% completion, 19-12 TD-Int). If he regresses again after this year, definitely has a shot to make the final list when we look back at the decade.

sorry but the only real bust that keeps coming into my head is from the 1990's. He was just in the news again.

Lawrence Phillips gets 31 years

Posted by Mike Florio on December 18, 2009 6:13 PM ET

Former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips, one of the biggest top-ten first-round busts of all time, has been sentenced to more than 31 years in prison for attacking his girlfriend, and for driving his car into three teens, according to the Associated Press.

The incidents occurred in 2005.

The Rams made Phillips the sixth overall pick in the 1996 draft, eight spots before Eddie George was selected by the Titans.

The quick collapse of Phillips' career makes the franchise's ability to win a Super Bowl only three years later even more amazing.

Vernon is a bust. But, I wouldn't put him that high. Alex Smith is more of a bust because he was a 1st overall pick and he really hasn't done anything. Vernon is in his second year. Plus, the Jets has David Harris, Calvin Pace, Bart Scott, and Bryan Thomas as LB's. It's pretty tough to compete with them.
