Buy or Sell: Ray Rice

Few RBs disappointed fantasy owners last season more than the previously productive Ray Rice. Few NFL players disappointed buying-sellingfans this offseason than the previously squeaky clean Ray Rice. It’s been a rough calendar year for the Ravens lead back and it’s led the team to bring in competition. But few backs had been as productive as Rice had the four seasons before 2013 came along. And few have the incentive Rice does to spend 2014 keeping his head down, staying quiet and focusing solely on football. So, was Rice’s 2013 indicative of a player whose best days are behind him? Or will he be the 2014 version of Josh Gordon, who served a two-game suspension and then went on to lead the league in receiving yards?

Ray Rice did have a disastrous 2013 season and he did follow it up with a disastrous offseason. And he’ll (kind of) pay the price for the latter by missing the first two games of the season. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, Rice is going low enough in drafts where he’s actually a steal. See, part of Rice’s struggles in 2013 were due to a hip injury that he now regrets having played through.

Buy or Sell: Doug Martin

Top 10 RBs flop in fantasy football more than any other position. But few in recent years have suffered the one year falloffs that buying-sellingDoug Martin did in 2013. After storming the league as a rookie in 2012, he played six mediocre games and then missed the remainder of the season with a shoulder problem.

There’s probably not going to be a lingering issue with the shoulder and few doubt that he’ll rebound to some level, assuming he stays reasonably healthy. But where does that leave his fantasy value?

He’s got a new coach, a new QB, three RBs pushing for time and a rebuilt offensive line. Whether those are good or bad things remains to be seen. So where would you draft the Muscle Hamster?

Buy or Sell: Toby Gerhart

Running backs have become a commodity in recent years, falling out of the first round of college drafts and struggling to get the big buying-sellingmoney contracts many believe they deserve. Few veteran free agent runners fell into better positions this off-season than Toby Gerhart, however. After four years of putting up solid numbers while backing up Adrian Peterson, he landed in Jacksonville with a chance to be the main ball carrier. Can he show he’s got what it takes to be the bellcow? Or will the Jaguars be looking for another starting RB in a year?

Buy or Sell: Kyle Rudolph

Kyle Rudolph missed half of the 2013 season with a broken foot. During the two seasons previous, he’s shown signs of stardom, but buying-sellingalso has disappeared for significant chunks of time. Was he the victim of poor QB play and unimaginative coaching? Or is he just a fair-to-middling player?

The Vikings seem to think he’s going to step it up a notch. The team just signed him to a lucrative five-year extension with hopes that the addition of Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator can take his game up a notch. So are you ready to jump on board the Rudolph train? Or are you a skeptic?

Buy or Sell: Arian Foster

Arian Foster was off to a solid start in 2013 before injuries took a toll, ending the one-time-top-fantasy-pick-overall’s season.buying-selling

He’s back and running at full strength – without his one-time backfield mate Ben Tate to steal carries. But there are still plenty of question marks hovering over the head of this aging star. It’s a new era in Houston – new coach, new QB, new blocking scheme. Can Foster rebound?

Buy or Sell: Andre Ellington

Cardinals fans clamored all season last year for Andre Ellington to replace the nondescript Rashard Mendenhall. Ellington had buying-sellingmany fantastic moments in 2013, but coach Bruce Arians stubbornly kept feeding his veteran the majority of the carries.

Ellington will get his chance this year. With Mendenhall mercifully retired, Ellington will take the top job and get a chance to show coaches he can put up similar numbers in a full-tim role. Do you think he’s up to the task?
