According to a quick look at Google Analytics, three people viewed my best bets for week nine, the second week this segment was in play.
Hopefully those three people didn’t put much stake in those predictions – they sucked. I went oh-for-four on Sunday on those picks and eroded my Centsports.com account by nearly half its value in the process.
It just goes to show that while gambling can be fun it’s best done recreationally and not in any effort to get rich or pay off your mortgage in a hurry. The poor showing also shows just how hard it is to beat Vegas on a regular basis.
Nonetheless, I’ll not give up. I’ll be back later this week with more picks – hopefully it goes better this time.

Last week I debuted the Best Bets column, a collection of two to four games that I’ll suggest as potential money winners. While we do our weekly picks of every game I’m starting this based on the theory that there’s no way I’d ever bet on every game because most of the point spreads are actually quite accurate.
Last week I nailed the over in San Diego vs New Orleans. I had that almost hit at halftime as both teams broke 30, easily clearing the 45.5 Las Vegas line.
I also hit on the New York Giants as a 2.5 point underdog against Pittsburgh. The game was closer than I expected and the Giants almost squandered the opportunity, but in the end it was the Giants defense – and an injured long-snapper that carried the Giants to a win, both straight up and against the spread.
I missed on my expectation that the Bengals would cover the 9.5 point spread against Houston, in the process hopefully learning a valuable lesson: when a team is as bad as Cincinnati they can lose to any other team, no matter how bad, regardless of the spread.
Still, I’ll take 2-1. If you do that every week you’ll end up a winner in Vegas. This week’s spreads are a little trickier, again using the Caesar’s/Hilton line at www.vegas.com/gaming:

After a lengthy delay, here are the picks we made last week. In a twist of fate, the week that we delayed posting them, we actually went out and finished in third place in our ranking pool–netting us some cash back (not quite the entry fee–but if we finish third or higher again, we’ll be covered for the year). We finished the week with just a 104–but we climbed to 30th overall for the year.
Head to head, I’ll have to get caught up on. But as for Week 9 picks…well, we’re not the most superstitious people in the world–but we figured why screw with what’s worked, so we’ve made our picks early again, but plan on holding off on publishing them for now.

My brother usually posts our picks and he’s got mine sitting in his inbox. He’s also made his so they’ll be posted, I’m told, sometime on Sunday.
But the picks will be delayed as he has taken a bit of a long weekend to celebrate his wedding anniversary.
We’ve been picking every game against the spread this season, though as mentioned in his post last week we both realize that’s sort of a ridiculous feature. It’d be a damn rare week where either of us ever felt strongly enough about all of the point spreads that we’d bet on every game.
So I’m going to debut yet another gambling feature to this site this week: Andy’s Best Bets.

Last week we bored regaled you with stories of our gambling exploits from Las Vegas, so we thought we’d better provide an update:
- First, at the tables, we did not do well overall. I did have a few nice runs, though, and I met some guys at the Wynn who developed the habit of shouting “ZoneBlitz.com!” to random strangers passing by–so we had that going for us. Hopefully they kept it up for the rest of their trip.

LAS VEGAS – As much as I enjoy playing Blackjack in Las Vegas there’s nothing more enjoyable in Las Vegas to me than sitting in a leather seat with a beverage (hopefully comped) next to me while I’m watching about 72 athletic events taking place simultaneously.
I haven’t been to every sports book Las Vegas has to offer but I’ve been to several. For what it’s worth, here are my favorite venues and why:
