Well, there were a couple bedtimes for the kids tonight, so we’re not getting here right at the start. No surprises in2015-draft the first couple picks anyway though, so it’s all good. Tony, John Vomhof Jr. and I will be sharing our relatively useless opinions (except to us) throughout the night.

10:33 – Three-and-a-half hours. Not bad, NFL. Signing off.

10:31 – Andy: I nailed that one. That means I got maybe three or four right for the round?

John: Lots of talent left tomorrow.

Overall not nearly as much trade activity as expected tonight. Hardly any.

Andy: Kind of anti-climatic, really. But I agree. Lot of good talent tomorrow.

10:26 – Andy: Patriots are in fact picking, it looks like. Looking as though first round done in three-and-a-half hours. Malcom Brown a possibility replacing Vince Wilfork for Pats?

10:25 – Andy: Saints needed defense. John Clayton says Stephone Anthony might have been a better pick for Green Bay than Randall. I think it’s hard to argue.

10:23 – Andy: Looks like the report on New England trading 32nd pick was wrong? Anyway, radio guys talking about how two trades is the fewest in the first round since something like 1874.

10:21 – John: Saints have to go defense, right?

10:20 – Andy: Damarious Randall to Packers. I was reading about him last night. He’s got a bit of workout warrior to him – he climbed from mid-round to first-round without really having the results consistently on Saturdays. Very surprised he went before Landon Collins. John: There are concerns Collins is too big, more like a nickel linebacker.

10:20 – John: Luxury pick. I don’t love it. This team is a title contender.

10:14 – John: Colts loading up for Andrew Luck. Wow. T.Y. Hilton, Andre Johnson, Dante Moncrief and now Phillip Dorsett.

Andy: I’m a little surprised it wasn’t Landon Collins. Packers take him now?

10:07 – Andy: 1500-ESPN reported a minute ago that Patriots traded the 32nd pick.

10:03 – Andy: Shane Ray on ESPN tells interviewers he knows he made a life-altering mistake and says he “owes the Broncos everything.” Lions get Laken Tomlinson.

10:00 – Andy: Thought Dallas might pull the trigger on an Adrian Peterson trade, but a Byron Jones draft pick makes sense for Cowboys. “Don’t think Morris Claiborne is getting that fifth year option,” John says. Further proof that Stephen Jones is running this team now, not Jerry.

9:54 – Andy: I don’t dislike Shaq Thompson, but Panthers have bigger needs, I think, at O-line and WR.

John: Shaq has talent, but he’s a tweener. Big questions. And they had much bigger needs.

John: Breshad Perriman to Ravens “was probably the most frequently mocked player-team combo. Logical Torrey Smith replacement.”

Andy: I was thinking, like blogger Kyle Casey, that was a Maxx Williams spot there. And like Panthers’ blogger Ken Dye, I thought Perriman might be a fit in Carolina.

9:47 – Andy: ESPN Radio says Ken Whisenhunt says Titans have already worked on offensive revisions that will allow for Marcus Mariota to start right away. Interesting if Zach Mettenberger isn’t going to get a shot to compete.

9:44 – Andy: In drafting Humphries, there goes one of the main two options for trade with Vikings for Adrian Peterson. With Hmphries and Mike Iupati, Cardinals have really improved OL this offseason.

9:42 – Andy: Cardinals get D.J. Humphries – who could be the best LT that team has had in awhile.

9:41 – Andy: If I heard correctly, Lions got a fifth this year, a fifth next year and G Manny Ramirez or a seventh in order to swap firsts with Lions.

9:36 – Andy: Broncos trade up for Shane Ray, who would have been a top five or six pick without some issues, including marijuana citation. Tony says “Gave up a lot to draft a bust pot smoker.” I say there’s enough potential there where it could end up being a steal. Could light up the defense. John says “Broncos gave up a lot to move up. … Good value if he doesn’t screw it up.” John Clayton on the radio reminds that Wade Phillips is the D-Coordinator. He was a terrible head coach, but he’s a good enough coordinator where if he thinks he can do something with Ray, I’d give him the shot.

9:27 – Andy: Bengals take non-sexy, but solid tackle prospect Ogbuehi from Texas A&M. Can play anywhere. John notes re: Eagles: “I like Agholor and he seems to be a good fit for Chip’s system. But not sure he’s a true No. 1 and neither is Jordan Matthews. … All slot receivers.” I agree. They’ve got Matthews, Agholor, Josh Huff and Riley Cooper, unless I’m forgetting someone. That’s a collection of No. 2 and No. 3 receivers. They did get better on defense with the Kiki Alonso acquisition, but losing Maclin and LeSean McCoy … I don’t know that this team is better at this point than when the season ended.

9:19 – Andy: John nailed this pick. And Nelson Agholor is a solid player. But A) Does he replace Jeremy Maclin/DeSean Jackson? And B) After all the moves that have been made, and all the efforts to get to the top to take Mariota, can Eagles fans be happy with this?

9:17 – Andy: John adds “Browns continue to build inside out. I like it. And Erving has good versatility along the line.”

9:13 – Andy: Cameron Erving to Cleveland. I think the Browns have done alright tonight in getting a big nose tackle and a versatile offensive lineman, particularly after their run blocking went kaput after Alex Mack got hurt last year. Much less flash than last season, but quite a bit of substance there.

8:59 – Andy: 49ers have had a bizarre offseason, but Al Sacco becomes the third blogger to nail their first round pick. Arik Armstead joins the Niners.

2015-04-30_21-09-51

8:57 – Andy: John notes that the Kevin Johnson pick makes sense for the Texans. I’d say so far there have been very few real reaches. Even Brandon Scherff, who I thought went earlier than expected, was the best OL on most experts’ boards.

8:56 – Andy: I agree on Gordon being better than the other guys. I think better than average, but below being a star. He is, I think, a step up on Ryan Mathews.

8:51 – Tony (TT) here. I’m a big believer in trends at positions from specific schools. Gordon didn’t crack my top 4 potential busts in this year’s 1st round, but with Wisconsin back track records (Dayne, Michael Bennett, etc), he was close. I think Gordon was better than them, but I don’t think he’s a star.

8:50 – Tony joining the conversation. We’ll note who’s talking from here on out and I’ll keep adding John’s thoughts when he passes them along.

—-

8:44 – If Gordon goes to San Diego as expected, Cowboys and Cardinals have needs at the RB position. There’s still potential for an Adrian Peterson move here. On another note, anyone worried that the outside skills Gordon showed in college won’t translate in the NFL because everybody is faster in the pros?

8:43 – John notes Parker makes a nice quartet with Jarvis Landry, Greg Jennings and Kenny Stills. If Ryan Tannehill can’t pick it up a bit, there’s a problem.

8:42 – Every indication is DeVante Parker to Dolphins. Folks on radio are saying Chargers traded up to 49ers spot at 15. Guessing they are grabbing Melvin Gordon.

8:35 – First off, John and I both think the Dolphins will run to to the podium to take WR DeVante Parker. Second, Saints grabbing Andrus Peat is further indication in my eyes that Saints may be moving toward a more balanced offense. Re-signed Mark Ingram, trade Jimmy Graham for Max Unger, add C.J. Spiller… could see a different team next year.

8:33 – League is doing a nice job of keeping things moving this year. Picks are in, the clock is running on the next team – it’s flying this year compared to most.

8:28 – Heard some boos when Cleveland announced the Danny Shleton pick. That run defense was abysmal. Nothing wrong with that pick – though John notes they better come back and get a WR. True enough with Josh Gordon out again, but there are more WR in this draft than most positions.

8:25 – Pace finally slowing a bit. Mixed reaction on Waynes to Vikes. John and I in favor. Tony mixed. There are some stats from Pro Football Focus against him. Coach Mike Zimmer will have to do some work with him.

8:16 – Vomhof indicates could live with Parker in MN, but not high on him. Trae Waines is my guess.

8:14 – Will be interesting to see what happens with Tre Mason. Gurley, when healthy, is a better back.

8:12 – Apparently rumors floating of Todd Gurley to Rams. Decent combo with Tre Mason – could be best player available with OL gone. John getting this from Schefter. Tony predicts Vikings will trade their pick.

8:06 – Wow. Ereck Flowers feels like a bit of a reach at nine. John disagrees. “OL makes sense there. not sexy but solid.” I guess that’s true – if the sexy guys are gone and you can’t trade down, it’s hard to go wrong with the best OL on the board. John says everyone from 7-20 is comparable. Could be right.

No major surprises yet, though after the first two picks our bloggers have missed on all six.

8:03 – Eight picks in 63 minutes – remember the days where the first round used to take six hours-plus?

8:02 – Falcons take Vic Beasley. Much needed rusher. Wisely pass on Gurley, even though he’s a great RB prospect. Build the trenches. JohnL “Beasley gives [Dan] Quinn his Leo. He’s immediately their best DL.” Agreed.

7:58 – Talking with John, we’re agreed it’s a trenches pick – OL or DL – not Gurley.

7:56 – They don’t go Gurley, do they?

Tony: When is the last time we were this far in with no trades?

7:54 – And White it is… I guess they’ll try to win 60-50.

7:52 – Speculation on the radio is that the Bears will take Kevin White. John agrees it’d be a formidable combo with Alshon Jeffery, which I agree with. But they need defense.

7:49 – Jets’ pick of Leonard Williams announced. John says solid pick there. Best player available. I agree. Some redundance with Muhammad Wilkerson, and I can’t get out of my head the bowl game where he got called for a bunch of unsportsmanlike calls, but he’s too talented to pass on.

John (A Vikings fan, like the rest of us): Kind of glad he’s gone.

Tony: Bust.

7:40 – John, Tony and I each question the Brandon Scherff to Washington pick. Don’t mind Scherff, but taking him at five when there is concern that he might be a guard or a right tackle rather than a left tackle … I’m not sure about that one.

7:35 p.m. – Tweeted that the Raiders, for the second year in a row, got my favorite player in the draft (Mack last year, Cooper this year).
