NFL Rumors

In an effort to beat the Brett Favre soap opera to death, Zoneblitz is now reporting that the Minnesota Vikings have inquired about his availability, pending his release from Green Bay.

WSSP-AM SportsRadio in Green Bay is citing Green and Gold Insider Mike Clemens who is reporting that the Vikings made the inquiry. The station reports that Favre talked with the Packers in March about coming back but was told he would be the backup to Aaron Rodgers, so as a result he wants out, having officially asked for his release.

The Packers released a statement saying “the organization made the commitment to move forward with our football team” when Favre announced his retirement in March. The team has spent considerable time grooming Rodgers and also drafted Brian Brohm in the second round in April, leaving Favre on the outside looking in.

Favre is apparently working out, throwing footballs, and definitely in preparation for the season, according to NFL.com, whose writer, Pat Kirwan, now estimates that there is at least an 80 percent chance the two-time Super Bowl quarterback plays in 2008.
So… it’s looking more and more like Favre is going to play somewhere during the upcoming season. Now the biggest question becomes where.

Okay, I know. Zoneblitz posted yesterday that Packer QB Favre wanted to play for the Vikings based on a goofball in Mississippi calling KFAN-AM radio in Minneapolis. But this one’s coming from the Entertainment Sports Programming Network itself, as Chris Mortenson is now reporting that Number Four wants out of Green Bay and has asked for his release.

Zoneblitz has gone on record saying the Packers should welcome him back if they want to make a Super Bowl run. And Zoneblitz has also been on record during all of the March retirement hubbub saying he would lead the Packers to a victory over the Vikes at least once this season.

Well, we may have been partially wrong, but it looks as though the rumors of Favre’s desired return are true. And who knows, if he is able to pressure the team into giving him his release, maybe Favre will spend a year or two tormenting the Packers while wearing purple.

This could get ugly in Green Bay – Favre could be taking a huge risk here testing the goodwill he’s built up over the years. But hey, if the guy wants to play they’ve got no real choice but to let him play, whether that happens in Green Bay, Minnesota or somewhere else.

I have mixed feelings about whether or not I’d like to see him end up in Minnesota. But it’d be hard to argue against what Favre could do when coupled with a decent offensive line and a running game comprised of Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor. I still think it’s more likely that he ends up with the Panthers, the Ravens or the Falcons. But of those four, the purple is arguably the closest to being able to make a run.

Crazy.

Brett Favre is angry with the Green Bay Packers and wants to play for the Minnesota Vikings, according to an interview on KFAN-AM in Minneapolis.

A member of the classified advertising staff for the Biloxi Sun Herald in Mississippi, who apparently is related to a member of the KFAN staff and also has a relationship with the Favre family, told KFAN that Favre doesn’t think much of the Packers’ wide receiver corp and also feels as though the team hasn’t wanted him for at least a couple years.

We here at Zoneblitz are skeptical at this point of the accuracy of the interview. A quick scan of the Biloxi Sun Herald Web site does not show a classified advertising staffer by the name of the person who was interviewed. And at times it almost seemed like a radio bit – as a caller following the interview said. “You almost pulled it off,” the caller said. “He is probably one of the higher performing people in his trailer park.”

Turns out, according to the guys at ChicagoSports.com, my brother may have finally gotten one right–Kevin Jones is apparently waiting for a call from the Bears.

But I have a feeling he might be waiting a while.

This is a team that by all accounts is content to go into the season with Devin Hester as their #1 WR, a move that if history proves correct, could turn their biggest only offensive threat (Hester’s return abilities) into a liability (think about what happened to Dante Hall when the Chiefs started trying to involve him in offense).  Why would they go out and sign a veteran, when they can throw Matt Forte and the other Adrian Peterson to the wolves 25-35 times a game?

The ChicagoSports team laid out the best four options for the Bears if they are going to go after a veteran–other than Jones (coming off a torn ACL) there’s Shaun Alexander (wrist surgery, sprained knee, sprained vagina since signing his big contract), Travis Henry (character issues), and LaMont Jordan (injured back, and as they point out–displays a lot of similar qualities to Cedric Benson, when it comes to practice habits).

Here’s hoping the Cubbies can keep going strong into November–otherwise it could be a loooooooong winter in Chi-town.

Another piece from Yahoo! Sports (taken from ProFootballTalk, where we saw it earlier this week, but weren’t in a punchy enough mood to bother writing about), Jeff Garcia is STILL whining about his contract situation.

A few of his quotes:

“If it doesn’t work itself out, if a contract is not presented as far as a renewal to finish my career, then I will seriously think about what my alternate options may be. And it may come to not playing football anymore.”

“I feel like when you mistreat people there comes a time when it doesn’t matter how much you are paid, it’s going to lead to some drastic decisions.”

“It would be really difficult to go through this season and not have something done before the season.  I would like to see the appreciation put out there.”

Yeah, it must be tough to get paid $2 million a year to play in 13 games a year, put up some ok numbers, and head home early after getting tossed aside in the first round of the playoffs by a wildcard team.

Someone needs to take Jeff aside, and make him understand that he’s lucky to have that starting job in the first place–he had one ok half-season after Donovan McNabb went down in Philly, after two miserable seasons in Cleveland and Detroit, and many considered him washed up.  And even now, he hasn’t played a full season or thrown 20 touchdowns since 2002, nor has he averaged over 200 yards a game since 2003, his last in San Francisco.

Yeah, having better wide receivers would help his numbers, but that’s not going to change drastically at this point of the season.  If he’s there, he might have another decent year like last year.  If he’s not, Brian Griese or Chris Simms could probably do about the same–without the whining.

Until the next season, of course.
