When it was announced that the Cleveland Browns had suspended Kellen Winslow for revealing his staph infection issues and voicing displeasures about how the team handled the situation it seemed to me that either the team was being thin-skinned and overreacting or there was more to the story.

Now it appears that’s true, as the Cleveland Plain-Dealer has a story today saying Winslow committed “profane verbal abuse of a club’s public relations member in the locker room” following last week’s game against Washington.

The conversation between Winslow and Amy Palcic, according to the paper, allegedly went like this:

Winslow: “Amy, I’m good. Can you please stop playing big sis and leave? Seeing what I’m going to say and sh–?”
Palcic, who was standing a few feet away, remained where she was.
Winslow: “Um, Amy, can you please leave?”
Palcic: “Talk if you want to talk.”
Winslow: “What?”
Palcic: “Talk. I’m not going to cut you off.”

Now, that’s certainly no Bobby Knight media tirade or anything. But the paper goes on to say that Palcic, at least two players and another member of the media staff tried to get Winslow to stop talking but Winslow continued on, even beckoning a Plain Dealer reporter for a one-on-one interview later.

I still think a suspension is a little over board in this case. But it’s a little more clear now exactly what went on during the post-game session that got the Browns so heated up. Is this relationship damaged beyond repair? Winslow apparently has said he wants to be a member of the Browns.

Only time will tell.
