CBSSportsline.com is among the many sites I try to check at least occasionally while searching for content for Zoneblitz which means I occasionally come across their columnist, Pete Prisco.

There are a lot of good reporters covering the NFL, many of whom have been cited here. I constantly learn things from Peter King on SportsIllustrated.cnn.com. The NFL Network’s Adam Schefter, Jay Glazer from FoxSports.com and Chris Landry, a veteran NFL scout who shows up on the radio all over the place, are three more journalists who provide a wealth of knowledge.

Then there’s Pete Prisco. I’m not saying he never provides anything of worth. He definitely pounds the pavement and he is willing to occasionally go out on a limb with his predictions and comments. But then he goes and posts a video like this one that did nothing but steal 58 seconds of my life that I won’t ever get back.

He starts the video whining about how security officials at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. threatened to take the CBSSports.com cameras and forced him to switch locations while filming and then spends some time reaming Patriots coach Bill Belichick for creating a sense of paranoia around the league.

“That’s what Bill Belichick’s Spygate did to the National Football League,” he whines. “The paranoia is everywhere. … All we are doing is shooting some harmless videos for CBSSports.com and they are trying to take our cameras. Bill Belichick, you did that and you should pay. Shame on you.”

For one thing Prisco’s rant relates nothing of use about football. For another, his diatribe illustrates exactly why many people dislike the media. He comes off as though he is saying CBSSports should be entitled to shoot whatever they want wherever they want. Teams are not required to give the media access to every minute nor every vantage point of their practices and if he was outside of an area the Panthers deemed okay he should, without question, move.

Now, the video rant does not specify whether there were rules posted or explained nor does it lay out how the Panthers’ security people treated the CBS folks – whether they were asked to move to a different location or forcibly removed.

But it appears from a video posted slightly before or after the above rant that he was not forced out of the stadium altogether. It’s understandable that he might be frustrated by teams reacting harshly to regulations now being enforced because of Spygate. But in bringing it up again as a new season is beginning Prisco is beating a dead horse. And he, not the Panthers, come off looking worse for his misplaced rant.
